Former Laker's Brother's Killer Pleads Not Guilty in Pasadena Court

A 24-year-old man from Pasadena pleaded not guilty in the shooting death of Mickey Cooper, younger brother of former Lakers star Michael Cooper, at Washington Park last November.

Aaron Miguel Conell faces multiple charges, including attempted murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm.

The charges include allegations that Conell personally used a 9mm semi-automatic handgun during the commission of the crimes and that he personally inflicted great bodily injury on the victim of the Oct. 29 shooting. Conell could face more than 50 years to life in state prison if convicted.

Pasadena Man Sentenced to 32 Years for Fatal Stabbing

Jose Antonio Santiago, a 71-year-old Pasadena resident, has been sentenced to 32 years in prison for fatally stabbing one man and injuring another outside a Pasadena bar in 2018. On January 29, a jury found Santiago guilty of first-degree murder with a knife and assaulting Daniel Trevino, another Pasadena resident.

The incident occurred on a sidewalk in the 2600 block of East Colorado Boulevard at around 1:30 a.m. on September 12, 2018. Santiago was upset that the victim, Jerry Chan, had not recognized him while they were at the Colorado Bar earlier.

Santiago stabbed Chan, who later died, and injured Trevino when he tried to intervene. A driver stopped and helped detain Santiago.
