Pasadena Water and Power Gears Up for Metropolitan Water District Pipeline Shutdown

Water

In preparation for a 10-day shutdown of water deliveries by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, Pasadena Water and Power (PWP) is taking precautionary measures to ensure minimal impact on the city's water supply.

The shutdown, scheduled between Feb. 5 and 14, is necessary for valve maintenance and facility inspection by the MWD.

As Pasadena typically draws about 60% of its water from MWD, PWP is implementing strategies to mitigate potential impacts, including storing greater volumes of water in its reservoir tanks, utilizing local groundwater supplies, and seeking cooperation from large commercial consumers to curtail outdoor water use.

PWP is also reaching out to key account customers and other large commercial consumers to seek their cooperation in reducing outdoor water use during the shutdown period.

The city currently operates under a Level 2 Water Supply Shortage Plan, restricting outdoor watering to one day per week through March 31.

Pasadena’s Homeless Count: A Step Towards Ending Homelessness

I had several encounters with homeless people in Seattle. I spoke to men who had hit rock bottom with alcoholism and other addictions.

The City of Pasadena is set to conduct its annual homeless count on Tuesday, January 23rd, and Wednesday, January 24th.

The count, which takes place from 8 to 10 p.m. on the 23rd and 6 to 8 a.m. on the 24th, is a snapshot of people experiencing homelessness in both sheltered and unsheltered situations.

The data collected during this one-night effort is reported to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and plays a vital role in securing funding and planning effective services and programs.

In 2023, the last count identified approximately 556 homeless residents in Pasadena.

The City’s programs have led to some successes, such as providing housing and support services to individuals experiencing homelessness.

Volunteers are crucial to the success of the homeless count, and this year’s event is no exception.

From Pasadena: A Groundbreaking Wearable Sensor Measuring Stress in Real-time

a business woman who is stressed and frustrated

In Pasadena, Caltech researchers have invented an "electronic skin" called CARES that measures stress by monitoring nine different markers in sweat.

This cutting-edge invention, designed to be worn on the wrist, allows users to engage in daily activities without interruption while providing continuous, real-time data on stress levels.

CARES combines sweat sensors with sensors that record pulse waveforms, skin temperature, and galvanic skin response, offering a comprehensive and accurate assessment of stress.

The device's innovative design includes new materials that enhance sensor stability, enabling long-term operation.

Machine learning plays a crucial role in interpreting the wealth of data generated by CARES, ensuring accurate measurement of interrelated physiological and chemical biomarkers.

The potential applications for CARES are vast, particularly in high-stress environments such as the military or space exploration, as early detection of stress levels allows for timely intervention, enhancing performance and overall well-being.
