Burglary Suspect Charged with Assaulting Police Dog in Pasadena

On Christmas Day, a burglary suspect identified as Jose Manuel Soto was charged with assaulting a Pasadena police dog named Rex, causing a serious injury.

Soto, who was arrested during a burglary at a store on E. Colorado Blvd., allegedly attacked the 2 1/2-year-old Dutch shepherd with a pair of scissors.

Rex sustained a two-inch cut to his snout and was immediately taken to a veterinary trauma hospital.

Despite the incident, Rex is recovering well and is expected to return to duty as Pasadena prepares for the upcoming Rose Parade and Rose Bowl game.

Soto, who pleaded not guilty, is set to appear in court on January 16 to determine if the case will proceed to trial.

Pasadena Hotel Workers to Protest on New Year's Eve Amid Contract Disputes

Labor unrest is growing in Pasadena, California, as hotel workers plan to protest on New Year's Eve and during the Rose Parade. The workers, who are represented by Unite Here Local 11, are protesting against local hotels that have yet to agree on a new contract.

The union, which represents over 32,000 hospitality workers in Southern California and Arizona, is advocating for wage increases, better health insurance, and manageable workloads.

The dispute has already led to strikes and the relocation of the Critics Choice Awards. While 24 hotels in the region have reached agreements with the union, the Pasadena hotels have not.

Pasadena Lawmaker's Minimum Wage Bill Triggers Thousands of Layoffs at Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut, in response to Assembly Bill 1228, is preparing to lay off thousands of delivery drivers across California.

The bill, introduced by Pasadena Assemblymember Chris Holden, aims to increase the fast-food minimum wage to $20 per hour.

The layoffs, affecting over 2000 drivers, are planned to take place before the wage increase comes into effect in April.

As a new operational strategy, Pizza Hut franchises are planning to transition towards third-party delivery apps.

The new law will impact over 550,000 fast food workers and approximately 30,000 restaurants in the state.

Pasadena's New Year's Eve and Parade Day 2023: What You Need to Know

Break Free

As 2023 comes to a close, Pasadena is gearing up for its annual New Year's Eve and Parade Day.

The city allows overnight camping on December 31, 2023, for attendees to secure the best viewing spots. However, due to the expected cold weather, it's advised to dress warmly.

The city encourages vigilance, with the "If you see something, say something" policy in place for reporting suspicious activities.

There are also some rules to follow: unattended chairs will be removed, selling items or space along the parade route without a permit is prohibited, and public areas must not be blocked.

Despite the festive atmosphere, the city recommends leaving pets at home as the parade can be stressful for them.
