🗓️ Upcoming Local Events

Pasadena Spotlight community, brace yourself for a rainy day this Wednesday, December 20.

The day starts with light rain in the early morning, with temperatures between 55° and 58°, and a gentle east-southeast breeze.

As we proceed towards noon, the rain remains persistent, and the temperature rises slightly to 59°.

The afternoon is expected to maintain this pattern with the possibility of a thunderstorm towards the later part of the afternoon.

Evening sees a slight drop in temperature to 57°, with continued rain and potential early thunderstorms.

For your comfort, we recommend dressing warmly and ensuring your clothing is waterproof to handle the day's weather.

Stay warm and dry, Pasadena Spotlighters!

Pasadena's Hospitality Industry Faces Unrest as Union Protests Continue

Unite Here Local 11, representing hotel employees, staged a "posada" protest in downtown Pasadena against the Hilton Pasadena hotel, which has failed to agree on contract negotiations.

The union is demanding a $5 wage increase, affordable healthcare, higher pension contributions, and the establishment of a housing fund to counter California's high cost of living.

The protest is part of a larger movement across Southern California, with hundreds of hotel workers pushing for similar contracts.

In the Dark: Copper Thieves Leave Pasadena Streetlights Disabled

The city of Pasadena has seen a rise in copper wiring thefts in recent weeks due to the increasing market value of copper.

Last Sunday marked the fourth such incident where copper was stolen from pull boxes, affecting streetlight operations.

Similar incidents in November have led to police suspecting a gang's involvement.

Copper wire theft isn't just a local issue - a report by Route 50 shows a 650% increase in such thefts in Los Angeles between 2018 and 2022.

Pasadena police are urging anyone with information about these cases to come forward.

Community Spirit Blossoms: Pasadena Recycles Thousands of Rose Parade Flowers

I made 2 beautiful photos of tulips one year ago. But uploaded only 1. So, let this one be here too.

The annual Rose Parade in Pasadena leaves behind thousands of discarded flowers. Keith and Sue Jesson, with the help of local volunteers, have been collecting these flowers for over 20 years, turning them into bouquets.

These floral arrangements are then distributed to 110 convalescent homes in Pasadena and the surrounding area, spreading love and kindness to elderly residents, particularly those without family visits during the holidays.

Each year, a different local organization hosts this operation, with San Marino Community Church being this year's host.

From Pasadena to Deep Space: NASA Streams Cat Video from Record 19 Million Miles

In a landmark achievement, NASA's Deep Space Optical Communications experiment recently streamed an ultra-high-definition video of a cat named Taters from an unprecedented distance of 19 million miles.

This milestone is part of NASA's efforts to develop high-bandwidth data streaming capabilities from deep space, which will be crucial for future human space missions.

The video was transmitted at a speed of 267 megabits per second, faster than most broadband internet connections.

This demonstration follows the "first light" achievement in November and showcases increased data downlink speeds and pointing accuracy.

Grammy-Nominated Jordin Sparks to Perform at Pasadena's Grand Finale

The 135th Rose Parade in Pasadena, set for January 1, 2024, will be concluded with a performance by Jordin Sparks, a multi-platinum singer, songwriter, and actress.

Sparks gained global fame after winning one of the highest-rated seasons of American Idol. She has sold over 10 million digital tracks in the U.S. and has toured with music industry giants.

Her Broadway and film debut, along with her charity work, have earned her recognition. Recently, she returned to Broadway and produced and starred in a Hallmark movie.
