Caltech Scientists Make Breakthrough in HIV Research: A Step Closer to Effective Treatment

Photo captured during office hours of a company in Brazil.

Researchers at Caltech have shed light on the biological processes underlying HIV's infection process by imaging an elusive HIV protein structure at an atomic scale.

Their work focused on the HIV envelope protein, which enables the virus to invade cells and is a promising target for potential treatments.

The team sought to understand what happens if the 'petals' of this protein can only grab onto one or two receptors on a T cell instead of three.

Their findings revealed that the virus may not be able to initiate the infection process in such scenarios, providing valuable insights that could guide the design of new therapeutics.

Pasadena Police Department Ramps Up Patrols to Curb Holiday Impaired Driving

The Pasadena Police Department, in alignment with the National "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" Enforcement Campaign, is ramping up efforts to tackle drunk and drugged driving this holiday season.

The initiative includes an increase in patrolling officers, focusing on drivers suspected of being under the influence.

The heightened enforcement comes in response to the increased risk of alcohol-related accidents during the holidays.

The department is encouraging residents to either stay home or plan a safe ride if they plan to drink, reminding the public that substances like marijuana and certain medications can also impair driving.

The campaign is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and will run through New Year's Day.

The Price of Plumbing: Decoding the Average Costs in Pasadena

The average cost for these emergency services is approximately $194.39. Persistent drain clogs can exacerbate pipe and drain issues, costing an average of $167.44 for repair.

Additionally, leaky old pipes or home renovation projects may demand new pipe installation or replacement, costing on average $436.72.

From Pasadena to the Cosmos: NEOWISE's Legacy Lives On Despite Impending Demise

NASA's Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE), managed by Pasadena's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is expected to cease operations by 2025 due to an upcoming period of increased solar activity.

Since its 2013 revitalization, NEOWISE has discovered a once-in-a-lifetime comet, spotted over 3,000 near-Earth objects, and bolstered global planetary defense strategies.

Despite its impending end, the data archive from the mission will continue to serve future celestial research.
