Pasadena Spotlight community, brace yourself for a splendid day of weather on Thursday, December 7.

The morning will begin with a partly cloudy sky and temperatures hovering around 50° to 60°, requiring a light jacket.

As the day progresses, expect the sun to break through the clouds around noon, providing a comfortable warmth of around 62° to 64°. A light sweater should be sufficient for the midday hours.

The afternoon will be the warmest part of the day, with temperatures peaking at a pleasant 66° under a sunny sky. Light clothing and sunglasses would be ideal during these hours.

Come evening, the temperatures will gradually drop to around 52° under a clear sky.

With breezes picking up to a brisk 9 mph, it's advisable to have your heavier jackets and scarves at hand if you're planning an evening outing.

Enjoy the day and dress adaptively!

Pasadena Prepares for Safe Celebration of the 135th Rose Parade

Break Free

With the 135th Rose Parade imminent, Pasadena authorities have released comprehensive safety guidelines for the thousands of spectators expected to attend.

The guidelines cover overnight camping, positioning along the route, the use of barbecues, and the supervision of minors.

They also encourage attendees to dress warmly, maintain good hydration, and report any suspicious activities.

A list of prohibitions designed to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for all is also included.

Authorities will implement heightened security measures, and Colorado Boulevard will be closed to motor vehicles from 10 p.m. on December 31.

Pasadena to Battle Winter Homelessness with $275,000 Shelter Upgrade

I met Michael in a Boston subway station. I told him I liked his sign. “What matters is what it means to you,” he told me. I asked what it meant to him. “Doing a deed or expressing kindness to another person without expecting anything in return,” Michael said. I love approaching strangers wherever I go. Listening and talking to them teaches you about people and how similar we all are to one another. Just like Michael, we’re all seeking human kindness.

The city of Pasadena has taken a significant step towards aiding its homeless population, with the City Council approving several contracts that allow Trinity Lutheran Church to host the city's Bad Weather Shelter.

The decision followed two community meetings held to address local residents' security concerns.

Departments from across the city have collaborated to identify necessary improvements for the shelter, which are estimated to cost up to $275,000.

A contract to cover these costs has been awarded to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran, and will be in effect until the end of 2024.

Friends In Deed, which has run Pasadena's Bad Weather Shelter for over three decades, has also been signed into a contract to continue operations of the shelter.

Rose Bowl Institute in Pasadena Welcomes New President, James Washington

James Washington, a celebrated UCLA alum and two-time Super Bowl champion, has been announced as the new President of the Rose Bowl Institute in Pasadena.

Washington's significant athletic background and local roots are well-aligned with the Institute's mission to cultivate future leaders.

His career highlights include playing in the Rose Bowl Game and Super Bowl XXVII, contributing to back-to-back Super Bowl victories, and being a part of NFL teams like the Dallas Cowboys, the Los Angeles Rams, and the Washington Redskins.

Washington, who also founded Shelter 37, Inc., a non-profit that offers enrichment and life skills programs in Southern California, succeeds founding President Charlie Firestone.

Holiday Safety in Focus: PWP Warns of Unattended Cooking Equipment Dangers

In the heart of the holiday season, Pasadena Water and Power (PWP) is actively enhancing the safety of our cherished community.

With the festivities causing an uptick in household chores, PWP is issuing important safety tips to prevent common and avoidable accidents that often occur during this period.

Statistics from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) indicate that unattended cooking equipment is the primary catalyst for home cooking fires.

The holiday season amplifies cooking activities, making it all too easy to neglect a boiling pot or a roasting turkey.

As such, PWP is imploring Pasadena residents to exercise vigilance in the kitchen and to constantly monitor their cooking equipment.

PWP encourages everyone to visit their website for additional safety advice to ensure a safe and merry holiday season for all Pasadena residents.

Pasadena's Free E-Waste Disposal Event: A Green Initiative for Responsible Recycling

Pasadena's City administration is organizing a free e-waste disposal event on December 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event, held near the Rose Bowl Stadium, is part of the city's efforts to promote responsible recycling.

Attendees can discard a wide range of electronic items, including computers, telecommunication devices, and household batteries.

The Department of Public Works is also providing free paper shredding services for sensitive documents, helping residents protect their identity.

Participation requires proof of Pasadena residency and the event's duration depends on disposal truck capacity.
