Murder Charges Filed in Wake of Pasadena Park Shooting as Crime Rates Soar
The peaceful morning of a typical Saturday in Pasadena was interrupted by a fatal shooting at Washington Park.
The victim, a 64-year-old local named Mickey Cooper, was found dead at the scene.
The city's ShotSpotter system, which detects gunfire, located the shot at around 4:10 a.m. Aaron Miguel Conell, a 24-year-old resident, was later arrested on unrelated assault charges, but as the investigation progressed, evidence emerged linking him to Cooper's murder.
As a result, his charges were amended to include murder. Conell remains in custody at the Pasadena Police Department, his bail set at $1.105 million.
The police department is urging anyone with information to come forward.
Pasadena to Sparkle with Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Hosted by Mayor Gordo
As the holiday season descends upon Pasadena, the city is preparing to welcome it with its customary warmth, good cheer, and a particular kind of Pasadena-style sparkle.
At the heart of this festive atmosphere is the Mayor's Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony, scheduled for Friday, December 1, from 5-7 p.m. at the Pasadena City Hall, situated at 100 N. Garfield Ave.
Mayor Victor M. Gordo will lead the city into the holiday season, igniting not just the towering holiday tree, but also the spirit of giving and community in the hearts of residents.
This free family holiday celebration is anticipated to be a captivating spectacle, featuring festive musical performances from the city's talented local youth and a holiday craft contest.
Additionally, the Pasadena Fire Department will be in attendance, not just to ensure the safety of the event but to also serve a higher cause.
They will be collecting new, unwrapped toys for the Spark of Love Toy Drive, a cause that resonates deeply with the city's commitment to helping those less fortunate during the holiday season.

Rose Bowl Stadium Seeks Volunteers for Annual Turkey Trot
The Rose Bowl Stadium, a central figure in Pasadena's community, is seeking volunteers for its annual Rose Bowl Turkey Trot.
This event, cherished by local families, is a significant part of the city's Thanksgiving festivities.
The stadium has invited interested individuals to sign up as volunteers for this Thursday's event.
The success of the Rose Bowl Turkey Trot is largely due to the dedication and commitment of these volunteers.
The stadium has expressed its appreciation in advance, recognizing the integral role volunteers play in making this event possible.
Huntington Library Enriches Collection with Historic Goya Portrait
The Huntington Library has enhanced its art collection with the acquisition of a historic portrait by Spanish master Goya.
The painting, portraying JosΓ© Antonio Caballero, was created in 1807, during Goya's period of prominence for his portraits of Spanish nobility.
This acquisition, supported by The Ahmanson Foundation, marks The Huntington's first Spanish oil painting and enriches its extensive collection of Spanish imperial history materials.
The painting will be available for public viewing at the Huntington Art Gallery starting November 29, 2023.
