Pasadena Prepares for Thanksgiving: What's Open, What's Closed?

Thankful

The City of Pasadena will observe the Thanksgiving holiday with closures across City Hall and most city services on November 23 and 24.

However, emergency services like the Fire and Police Departments will remain fully operational.

Citizens can avail online services for power and water emergencies, account payments, and permit applications during the closures.

Trash and recycling collection, public transport, and parking regulations will be adjusted for the holiday.

All Pasadena Public Library sites and city-operated recreation centers will be closed, but parks will remain open.

The “Authentically Yours, Pasadena” campaign will commence on Small Business Saturday, November 25, promoting local shopping and providing free canvas tote bags at various welcome stations.

Rose Garden Curator Shares Secrets to Long-Lasting Bouquets

Tom, the Rose Garden curator at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, has some valuable advice for those who wish to keep their fresh cut roses vibrant for an extended period.

In an attempt to allow people to enjoy their bouquets for the longest possible time, Tom shares his knowledge about picking the right stage of the flower to cut and how to care for them post-harvest.

To begin with, one needs a bowl of water along with a vase for the bouquet. While floral preservatives are a good choice to enhance the life of your bouquet, a tablespoon of Seven Up or Sprite (not diet) mixed in two cups of water can serve as a suitable substitute. These drinks contain sugar, which is essential for the roses' longevity.

The ideal stage to cut a rose is when a few petals have started to pull away from the bud, signalling the commencement of the opening process.

This allows the flower to continue its opening process in the vase, thus extending its lifespan.

Cutting a fully bloomed rose reduces its life since it has already spent some of its vitality in the garden.

Before placing the rose in the vase, it's best to remove the leaves from the lower part of the stem, as they can contaminate the water quickly.

Cutting a quarter of an inch off the stem is also recommended as it locks water into the sap flow of the stem, preventing air from entering.

Choosing flowers in different stages of blooming can also prolong the life of the bouquet.

Ideally, select ones with bright yellow stamens; browner stamens indicate that the flower is past its prime.

Lastly, Tom recommends changing the water in the vase every two days to maintain freshness.

While he admits that he doesn't always follow this rule at home, he insists that it's an excellent practice to adopt.
