A Pasadena resident in his 50s became the victim of a shooting in the 300 block of Elizabeth Street just before 1:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 16.

The ShotSpotter technology, alongside calls from residents, alerted the police to the incident.

One of the calls was from a family member of the victim. The victim was found and transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect, believed to be a man in his 20s, is still at large. The investigation continues, and the Pasadena Police Department is seeking information from the public.

Rising Pedestrian Deaths in Pasadena: Is Banning Right Turns on Red the Answer?"

Sky is Home

With a 233% increase in pedestrian fatalities in 2021, Pasadena, CA, is now the 8th deadliest city for pedestrians in the U.S.

This alarming trend has spurred discussions about banning right turns on red, a practice that some argue contributes to these accidents.

Washington, D.C. and Ann Arbor, Michigan, have already banned right turns on red, and other cities, including Chicago, are considering similar measures.

However, critics argue that such a ban would not necessarily make streets safer and could inconvenience motorists and impact public transportation and deliveries.

This debate is part of a larger conversation about road safety, energy conservation, and infrastructure.

Arguments in favor of banning right turn on red

- Advocates argue that drivers should not have the authority to decide when it is safe to turn right on red.

- The rise in distracted driving makes it even more crucial to eliminate the option for right turns on red.

- Banning right turn on red would prioritize pedestrian safety and reduce accidents.

- Pedestrians and bicyclists are at risk due to drivers not paying enough attention while making right turns on red.

- Restricting right turn on red would create a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists.

Arguments against banning right turn on red

- Some argue that blanket bans on right turn on red would not necessarily make streets safer.

- A study analyzing California crash data found that right turns on red accounted for a small number of pedestrian and bicyclist deaths.

- Critics claim that the movement to ban right turn on red is part of an agenda to make driving more difficult.

- Concerns are raised about the inconvenience to motorists and potential impacts on commuter buses and deliveries.

- There are concerns that penalties from right-on-red bans would disproportionately affect lower-income drivers.
